The Partition

Dr Rajinder Pal Singh

My child, we cannot go to the other side

Because of, you see, this great divide

The vision of some wise men

Has resulted in the Partition

‘’But you have spent a lifetime there

Your memories are spread everywhere

What changed all of a sudden

Trip to your own homes’ are forbidden?''

Alas, a friendship of yesteryears

Ended in blood shed and tears

Divided in the name of Divine

Drawn on a British Radcliffe line

‘’Now, that is a big surprise

Freedom was a joint enterprise

Together you ended the British rule

Couldn’t you manage our own mule?''

My child, the division of our nation

They say, was based on religion

Or of political ambitions dear

Reasons that are yet unclear

‘’Why made you cross the fence?

When you had so many friends?

Couldn’t the wisdom of wise men

Prevent the division of a nation?''

Donning garbs of different hues

Demons danced in pious shoes

Endless Caravans of human plight

Wounded humanity was in its flight

‘’But uncle, shouldn’t faith unite?

Be it coloured, black or white?

Religions preach co-existence

Where then was the tolerance?''

Stones that once were human heart

Stood still as miseries tore apart

Wails of babies and orphans even

Couldn’t reach God in heaven

‘’Love compassion are a basic rule

Does that need be taught in school?

Uncle, how can we attain heaven

By creating hell for our brethren?''

Decent or pious of either side

Were evil and horror redefined

Monsters who were once human

Ripped the dignity of women

‘’That’s truly an abhorrent sin

Mothers are loving for everyone

How did good vanish from within

Despite holy Gita, Granth or Qoran''

Strange are ways of the Divine

Who never reveals his true define

In midst of lust and macabre

Unfazed was our merciful Creator

‘’Oh! Beliefs won and truth lost?

Wisdom in a permafrost!

If Scriptures all read the same

Surely Partition must be real shame?''

My dear child, that’s true

Divisions are cemented in a glue

Fear and suspicion now abide

Across the fences of This Divide

''Of Divinity is a simple art

God resides in every heart

Have love for one and all

On either sides of the wall’’

My goodness you speak so well

Who are you and where do you dwell

You surely have put this elder to shame

Dear child, may I know your name?

‘’Me? I’m a child of Mother Nature

Vying for a bright and safe future

I transcend across all boundaries

Like a river flowing through valleys

Neither a Khan  nor a Singh

A part of every human being’’
